It is Strength, Yearning Completeness (An Ode to Happiness) - Personal Essay

ree

For many, happiness is a subjective topic. It is something that cannot be measured or is at least measured differently for each individual. This is especially true for the genuine kind of contentment. Some people find it in the first sip of coffee in the morning, as the smooth warm liquid embraces their taste buds. It could also be in the warmth of a lover’s embrace or the softness of a two month old puppy’s fur. While happiness is the soft tapping of rain against the window and being seated indoors with a refreshing cup of tea for some, others may find solace on the heat of flaky sand, watching the ocean splash onto the shore or sitting in your spot at the table in your childhood home as the chatter of your beloved family surrounds you with the comfort and serenity of their presence. Although, there is always a sense of undeniable comfort in the sound of a loved one’s heartbeat as you rest your head softly on their chest as their arms envelop your own body that seems tiny in such a large, frightening world.

Many people cannot find comfort in such things; their lives are tainted by the darkness of melancholy. It surrounds them like a thick layer of fog, preventing any sunlight from entering their deepest, darkest thoughts. Their voices silenced by the abuse of their own minds and perhaps the anxiety of failure or judgement.

But hope is around the corner. Hope that shines bright and white, blinding your vision. It is so blinding that it scares the hurt away. Such light can force even the darkest of darkness into its own pit of despair, leaving its vessel. While it may return, the light is strong enough to break through it. It is strength, yearning completeness.
